Building the Care Closet
Before our wonderful Executive Director, Hailey started working with Beyond These Walls she had this great idea to send trans women release packages, using her own money. These packages included one outfit to wear on their release date. Hailey understands how important this is for trans women. For many women releasing from a men's prison this is the first time they are able to dress as their true selves in public. Hailey was fortunate enough to have a family member send her a release package but she knows not everyone has family helping on the outside. Not only do we help trans women release from men’s prisons, we also help trans men releasing from women’s prisons.
When Hailey became ED, she was talking with her husband, Paul, and he had the idea to expand what Hailey was doing on her own to make sure every LGBTQ member has a care package when they get out. With the help of grant money and clothing donations we now have the ability to make this happen. Paul and Hailey have devoted an entire bedroom in their house to be the care closet. Paul works as a volunteer to put these packages together. These packages include: a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, hairbrush, razors and shaving cream and makeup removable wipes (if needed). We also include two tops, two pairs of pants/skirt, socks, underwear, shoes, and a seasonal appropriate coat/jacket. In the winter we also supply a beanie, gloves and a sweatshirt.
For our transgender members they also receive cash assistance in the form of a Visa gift card. At this point we are only giving cash assistance to the trans community. However it is our goal to eventually extend this service to all members.
These packages are extremely important to our members. We do the best to give everything they ask for, but we do have limited resources. We have received some spectacular donations, and thank all who have pitched in to make the care closet the amazing resource that it is.
